THIS WEEK IN THE NFLThe 2006 season is just around the corner and not a moment too soon. There are exciting things happening all around the NFL! It’s time to keep a careful watch as new stars are born and others fade out. This coming week I’ll look at the major coaching changes around the league. We witnessed the most exciting draft in recent history last week with plenty of intrigue and surprise. Key player trades and acquisitions have occurred in the off season that deserve close scrutiny. There are some major role players still holding out, a few demanding to be traded and one seasoned champion with the decision of his life to be made this in the near future. Minicamps have begun and that is always a good way to wet one’s appetite in anticipation of the coming year. A new Commissioner of Football will keep everyone on their toes. This promises change across the board, affecting everything from front office labor decisions to player conduct. We saw atrocious officiating last season and we will have to wait and see if the NFL can get that key issue under control. The coming weeks will provide a wealth of information concerning the outcome of this season. This column will keep you up to date on all the happenings around the NFL. ROD'S GAMES OF KEY SIGNIFICANCE AND INTERESTNo news today. WHO’S HOT? WHO’S NOT?The New Orleans Saints are on the move in the right direction with the surprise pick of Reggie Bush in the 2006 Draft. The Saints were also able to acquire the services of Drew Brees at quarterback. The team has a new head coach, Sean Peyton. Peyton is a perfect fit for the job. He comes over from the Dallas Cowboys where he fired his guns as the team’s assistant head coach and passing coordinator. He brings a treasure chest of experience having tutored the likes of Drew Bledsoe, Vinnie Testaverde and Quincy Carter under various teams around the league. He draws from coaching experience with the likes of Bill Parcels and Jon Grueden. Watch this team as they rebuild as they rebuild both a franchise and city. THE WHO'S WHO OF BLACK AND BLUEKey injuries plague most of the thirty-two teams in the NFL right now. The list is long and the true prognosis of players is all the same. “Should be ready game day”. We’ll take a look those expected to start the season and those who won’t next week. THE RUMOR MILLThe rumors and gossip abound. Trade rumors are burning up the wires. Keep your eyes and ears tuned as the quarterback shuffle continues around the NFL. Job openings are hard to find at that position and even harder to keep in this era of Free Agency. Number Two will be out there trying to unseat Number One at every single training camp in America. I’ll keep you up on who’s where and likely to start as the preseason progresses. For the moment focus on the Daunte Culppper situation in Miami, the off season rehabilition of the injury to Carson Palmer in the playoffs, as well as the Brian Leftwich situation. NFL POLICE BLOTTERRicky Williams has been handed down his sentence at the hands of the league office for his most recent substance violation and there is heavy speculation he may spend a year up in the Canadian Football League. WORTH A LOOKHere we will look at exciting happenings and news from around the NFL as well people, places and things the sport casts it’s giant shadow over. |
